The Four Agreements: 3 Reasons I Recommend It

For my first Dr. Jen’s book suggestion, I’m starting with The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, one of the books I talked about in group this week.
Don’t Take Anything Personally
By noon on Monday, I’d already quoted this agreement.
A client in group was relating a story about how his cousin’s behavior had hurt his feelings. He thought he had, in some way, done something to offend her.
When they finally had a chance to talk about it, the slight wasn’t a slight at all. His cousin was keeping a secret she was worried about sharing.
Cue The Four Agreements and a good discussion of how we personalize things that aren’t about us at all.
Why I Recommend The Four Agreements
- It’s a short read. There’s always a better chance of a client following through with a reading suggestion if it’s short and doesn’t feel daunting.
- The agreements speak to values that apply to all areas of life. I specialize in treating addiction and problematic sexual behavior, but the principles are helpful for anyone, even if they aren’t struggling with these issues.
- The agreements are just a great creed to live life by.
