The cultural landscape of the last decade has been defined by a curious paradox. While societal conversations around consent and safety have become more robust, “dark romance” literature and narratives centered on dominance and submission—exemplified by the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomenon—have exploded in popularity among women. This trend raises a central question for researchers: Why do narratives involving dominance, submission, and even non-consensual scenarios remain a primary driver of female media consumption?

A 2026 study published in The Journal of Sex Research by von Andrian-Werburg et al. provides a groundbreaking look at this phenomenon. Moving beyond outdated stereotypes, the researchers utilized a “biopsychosocial” approach to analyze data from 571 women, seeking to understand what actually predicts arousal when it comes to “rough” content.

Women Are Consuming the “Rough Content” Differently

While men traditionally consume more pornography overall, data suggests that when women engage with sexual media, they often gravitate toward more intense categories. Statistics from Pornhub indicate that women are 34% more likely than men to watch hardcore content, 30% more likely to view bondage, and 29% more likely to watch gangbang scenarios.

However, a significant “modality gap” exists. Women are notably more likely than men to prefer written pornography—ranging from commercial romance novels to “Slash Fiction.” This preference is likely rooted in evolutionary parental investment strategies. Unlike the instrumental, visual nature of video pornography, narrative forms allow for the development of interpersonal context. For women, who historically prioritize traits signaling partner commitment and resource security, the “meaning” behind an encounter provided by a story is often more arousing than purely visual cues.

Debunking the “Biological Clock” Narrative

Traditional Evolutionary Psychology, specifically Sexual Strategies Theory (SST), often suggests that an interest in aggressive sexual content might indicate a “fast life-history strategy”—a biological orientation toward higher reproductive output in unstable environments.

The 2026 study explicitly challenges this. Researchers found that biological and life-history indicators—specifically the “K-factor” (a measure of life-history strategy), the onset of menarche (age of first menstruation), and the participant’s age—did not significantly predict arousal to non-consensual stimuli. This directly contradicts previous findings (such as Salmon et al., 2019) that sought to pathologize these preferences as biological survival strategies.

Furthermore, the study established a vital baseline that is often lost in media sensationalism: across the entire sample, the consensual stimulus elicited stronger sexual arousal (M = 2.83) than the rape stimulus (M = 2.60). As the researchers concluded:

“The data indicate that most women report greater arousal following the stimulus depicting a masculine, emotionally attentive partner.”

The Power of the “Script”: How Past Media Shapes Future Arousal

One of the study’s most significant findings involves a “disordinal interaction” regarding previous media exposure. The researchers applied the “Acquisition, Activation, and Application Model (3AM)” to explain how sexual socialization occurs.

Under this model, “Activation” refers to making previously learned mental “scripts” more salient. The data revealed that women who had previously consumed violent pornography reported significantly higher arousal to the rape stimulus. Crucially, this exposure had no effect on their arousal levels during the consensual scenario. This suggests a “specialization” of desire; repeated engagement with “rough” content may create specific mental scripts where these scenarios are “Applied” as familiar and, eventually, sexually arousing within a fictional context.

Are you exploring your trauma? Do you feel your childhood experiences were detrimental to your current mental or physical health? Utilize this free, validated, self-report questionnaire to find out.

Take the Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) Questionnaire

The Complex Role of “Rape Myth Acceptance”

The study also explored “Rape Myth Acceptance” (RMA)—the endorsement of societal beliefs that suggest women “ask for” assault or that rape is impossible if a woman resists. The data showed that higher RMA was associated with greater arousal across both consensual and non-consensual stimuli.

This suggests that RMA may simply be a proxy for general sexual responsiveness or openness. For some, these beliefs may serve as a “psychological distance” or a protective shield, allowing them to interpret aggressive fictional scenarios as “rough but consensual.” Central to this is what researchers call the “naturalistic fallacy”:

“Often based on the naturalistic fallacy… for example, the unfounded/mistaken idea that the male sex drive is ‘uncontrollable’ – these beliefs represent a flawed rationale that can be used to justify or excuse rape perpetration.”

The researchers also noted that the presence of alcohol in erotic narratives can further blur these lines of consent, feeding into the “implied consent” psychological shield that some viewers use to navigate problematic content.

Subjective vs. Reflexive Arousal: Why the Body and Mind Disagree

A vital distinction for any sexuality researcher is the difference between “affective sexual arousal” (the subjective feeling of being “turned on”) and physiological responses, such as vaginal lubrication.

The study emphasizes that physical responses are often “non-specific” protective reflexes. The female body may prepare for penetration—regardless of the mind’s evaluation of the partner’s character—as a biological mechanism to prevent physical injury during a potential assault. This “protective reflex” means that physiological arousal in a research lab or while reading a book does not equate to genuine desire or a real-world wish for harm.

Summary: Toward a Multifaceted Understanding of Desire

The findings suggest a “multifaceted etiology” for female pornography preferences. They are not the result of a single biological drive or a “fast” reproductive strategy. Instead, they represent a complex intersection of social conditioning, narrative context, and individual sexual responsiveness.

As a researcher, I find the future of this field both promising and fraught. As generative AI begins to personalize erotic narratives, we must consider the ethical implications of “scripts” written specifically for the individual. How will our understanding of the darker aspects of human desire shift when technology can perfectly mirror—and perhaps reinforce—our most private, complicated psychological landscapes?

The Search for Solutions

“Chemsex,” the use of psychoactive drugs to enhance sex, is a recognized public health concern due to its association with increased risks of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

In response, a range of programs, from counseling to medication, have been developed to address these risks. The common assumption is that the primary goal of these programs is to help individuals reduce or stop the drug use associated with chemsex.

However, a major new systematic review and meta-analysis that synthesized the results of 12 different studies challenges this assumption, revealing a more nuanced and surprising picture of what “success” actually looks like in this area.

Takeaway #1: Chemsex Interventions Target a Specific Risk, Not the Drug Use Itself

The single most effective outcome identified by the review was a clear and significant victory for public health: bio-behavioral interventions were found to substantially decrease the number of episodes of unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) with serodiscordant partners, or partners with a different HIV status, a result so strong it was highly statistically significant (p<0.001).

However, in what may be the most counter-intuitive finding, the review also concluded that the interventions did not lead to a reduction in the use of psychoactive substances during sexual activities.

This is a significant finding because it reframes the goal of these interventions from one of drug abstinence to one of harm reduction. The data shows that the programs are succeeding at reducing a primary risk factor for HIV transmission, even if they don’t stop the underlying drug use itself.

They are making a high-risk behavior safer.

Bio-behavioral chemsex interventions reduce the risk of UAI with serodiscordant partners, a high-risk factor for HIV seroconversion.

Takeaway #2: The Evidence is Narrower and More Fragile Than It Appears

While the primary finding is promising, the review also reveals critical limitations in the current body of research, suggesting the evidence is not as robust as it might seem.

Geographic Bias: All 12 studies included in the meta-analysis were conducted in the USA. This raises what the review calls “concerns regarding the generalisability of these findings to other countries” in Europe, Asia, and Australia where chemsex is also practiced.

Drug-Specific Focus: Chemsex is known to involve several drugs, including mephedrone and GHB/GBL. Yet, 11 of the 12 studies focused exclusively on methamphetamine use. The review notes this highlights a “dearth of research” for interventions targeting other relevant substances.

Risk of Bias: The quality of the evidence is a concern. The majority of the studies (67%) were rated as having a “high risk of overall bias.” Key issues included a reliance on participants self-reporting their behaviors and high drop-out rates, which tempers confidence in the overall conclusions.

Are you exploring your trauma? Do you feel your childhood experiences were detrimental to your current mental or physical health? Utilize this free, validated, self-report questionnaire to find out.

Take the Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) Questionnaire

Takeaway #3: Beyond a Single HIV Risk Factor, the Benefits Remain Unclear

While the interventions successfully reduced UAI with serodiscordant partners, their impact on other risky behaviors was more ambiguous.

The review found that interventions led to a decrease in the total number of sexual partners and the number of partners with whom UAI occurred, but these reductions were not large enough to be statistically significant.

Specifically, the review could not establish a statistically significant link between the interventions and outcomes such as the total number of sexual partners, the number of partners where UAI took place, the overall number of episodes of UAI, or the frequency of sex involving substance use.

This finding does not mean the interventions are failures. Rather, it suggests they are highly targeted in their effect, acting on one very specific, high-stakes behavior rather than serving as a “magic bullet” for all behaviors associated with chemsex.

Conclusion: Reframing the Success of Chemsex Interventions

This comprehensive review sends a clear message: chemsex interventions show tangible promise for reducing a critical HIV risk behavior, even if they don’t reduce drug use itself.

At the same time, the scientific evidence supporting these interventions has significant gaps, including a narrow geographic and substance focus and a high risk of bias in the underlying studies. The review presents a paradox: the most successful interventions are the ones that ignore the most obvious target: drug use and, instead, focus on mitigating its most dangerous consequences.

As we move forward, should the goal of public health be focused less on abstinence and more on providing tools that demonstrably make risky behaviors safer?

Challenging the “Stranger Danger” Archetype

For decades, the public’s conceptualization of “child pornography” was tethered to a specific, mid-90s archetype: a predatory adult in a basement, wielding a camera to exploit a child. This “stranger danger” narrative shaped the first generation of digital safety laws, but it relied on a technological bottleneck that no longer exists. In the early digital era, creating and distributing such material often required “intermediaries,” developers or specialized services, who acted as a friction point for reporting abuse. Today, that barrier has vanished. A landmark 2026 study published in Sexual Abuse reveals a landscape that has shifted from adult-captured content to Image-Based Sexual Abuse (IBSA). A broader term encompassing the non-consensual making, distribution, and threatened distribution of sexual images.

The data is clear: the primary producers of modern abusive content are not “strangers,” but the youth victims themselves and their immediate social circles.

A Massive Shift in Content Creation

The study provides a staggering clarification of the digital landscape: the vast majority (86%) of abusive episodes involved images produced by youth. Either by the victims themselves (73.7%) or by peer perpetrators (12.1%).

In stark contrast, images actually produced by adults accounted for less than 8% of the total episodes.

The velocity of this shift is remarkable.

In 2010, youth-produced images accounted for roughly 40% of law enforcement databases; that figure has more than doubled in just over a decade.

This reflects a fundamental change in adolescent socialization where digital media is fully integrated. The “democratization” of recording devices means the power of production has moved into the hands of the adolescents, often within contexts of dating, flirtation, or peer pressure, removing the traditional predatory intermediary entirely.

“This shift in terminology [from child pornography to CSAM/CSAI] was intended to emphasize that the images were often made by in-person sexual abusers, who recorded their abusive conduct… The new conception also acknowledged the ongoing harm to the children depicted, as these shareable images can be characterized as ongoing abusive provocations and reminders.”

Why the Stranger Myth is Dangerous

The persistent fear of the “online stranger” creates a dangerous blind spot.

The study findings reveal that only 3.4% of youth perpetrators were “not known in-person.”

Mathematically, for youth-on-youth abuse, the “predatory stranger” is almost a statistical anomaly. Even among adult perpetrators, 59% were offline acquaintances like dating partners or friends.

While 36.7% of perpetrators’ identities remained “unknown” to the victims, a significant data gap that complicates reporting, the known data points to a reality where the threat is an in-person peer or partner.

Perpetrator Relationship Breakdown

Adult Perpetrators

Youth Perpetrators

Dating Partner

9.5%

14.3%

Friend/Acquaintance

7.1%

12.5%

Not Known in-person

12.3%

3.4%

The Victim as the Producer: A New Tool for Adult Abusers

Perhaps the most counter-intuitive finding is the role of the victim in adult-perpetrated abuse.

In 75% of adult-perpetrated episodes, the images were originally produced by the youth victim. Modern adult abusers rarely need to capture images themselves; they leverage unequal power dynamics to manipulate “normal developing interests in sex” into digital assets.

Adult “Groomers” and “Coercers” no longer require physical proximity to generate material.

By leveraging romantic pretense or blackmail, they turn the victim’s own device into an instrument of exploitation. This evolution demonstrates how predators have adapted to a world where self-production is the social norm, weaponizing the victim’s own agency against them.

The Five-Category Framework for Abuse

To address the complexity of modern IBSA, the study proposes a five-category framework that moves beyond binary labels to define the specific intent and dynamics of the abuse:

Adult Producers: Perpetrators who create images to document their own physical abuse of a child for memorialization or monetization.

Adult Coercers: Predators who extort youth into creating and sharing explicit content through the use of threats or digital blackmail.

Adult Groomers: Perpetrators who manipulate youth into self-production by masquerading as romantic partners or offering items of value.

Juvenile Coercers: Peers who weaponize force, threats, or emotional guilt to pressure victims into supplying explicit images.

Juvenile Betrayers: Peers who breach a victim’s confidence by sharing images given voluntarily or by taking secret images of a peer without their consent.

The Prevention Paradox: Why Punishment Might Backfire

The study highlights a critical “prevention paradox”: an over-reliance on harsh criminal sanctions for youth may actually decrease safety.

When the legal system treats peer-to-peer “betrayals” with the same punitive weight as adult predation, victims become reluctant to report. They fear that reporting a peer, or admitting to self-production, will result in themselves or their friends being permanently labeled as sex offenders. To counter this, we must move toward restorative justice and rehabilitation models.

Effective prevention requires providing technical resources for image removal and focusing on the nuances of digital boundaries rather than simple prohibition.

“Warnings simply to not talk to strangers, not to share information and not to make sexual images are insufficient. These do not address the complexity of the situations many youth face or the context for these offenses, which include romance, bullying, and normal developing interests in sex.”

Redefining Digital Consent

The epidemiology of digital abuse has fundamentally changed.

We are no longer defending against a shadow in a dark room. We are navigating a landscape of peers, partners, and self-captured content.

This necessitates a move toward a “consent standard” rather than a “prohibition model.” Protecting youth today requires multidisciplinary agencies, like Children’s Advocacy Centers, that offer supportive, trauma-informed interventions rather than purely punitive ones.

The Final Thought

If the statistical “threat” is more likely to be a known peer or a manipulated self-capture than an online stranger, are our safety conversations still stuck in the 90s?

We must adapt our education to a reality where the greatest risk to a child is often found in their own contact list. What are your thoughts on this?

How AI Nudification Became the New Adolescent Normal

From Virtual Fitting Rooms to Digital Danger

Generative AI (GenAI) was supposed to be our creative co-pilot. We didn’t see AI Nudification coming.

We marveled at its ability to turn text into art and embraced “virtual try-on” applications that allowed us to see how clothing might fit using nothing more than a smartphone camera. But as a tech ethicist, I’ve watched this innovation take a dark, predatory turn. While the underlying technology, specifically “inpainting,” is legitimate, its application in adolescent circles has reached a terrifying tipping point.

We are no longer talking about a few “tech-savvy” outliers; we are witnessing the mass-normalization of AI-generated Child Sexual Exploitation Material (CSEM) among teenagers. This isn’t just the next stage of digital growing pains. It’s a fundamental shift in how the first generation of “AI adolescents” navigates consent, identity, and digital harm.

Takeaway 1: The “Scaling Gap” and the New AI Nudification Normal

For years, educators and parents tracked the steady rise of traditional “sexting.” Historical meta-analyses placed adolescent creation and receipt of self-generated sexual imagery at roughly 14.8% and 27.4%, respectively. This latest data reveals a staggering “scaling gap” that should alarm every stakeholder in digital safety.

Today, GenAI has effectively quadrupled those rates. According to a nationally representative survey of 13-to-17-year-olds:

55.3% of adolescents have used AI “nudification” tools to create sexualized images of themselves.

54.4% have received these images.

What was once a niche behavior has become a majority experience. This isn’t just a technological update to sexting; it is a total normalization of CSEM production as a routine part of adolescent sexual exploration.

Are you an LPC in need of continuing education? Dr. Weeks has a course on this material and many other unique and interesting topics.

Takeaway 2: Nudification vs. Creation – The Personal Toll of Inpainting

It is vital to understand the technical nuance that makes this trend so invasive. There is a massive difference between general text-to-image GenAI (which creates an image from a prompt) and “nudification” tools. These tools utilize a technique called inpainting, which modifies a pre-existing, real photo.

The survey found that usage of these specific nudification tools is significantly higher than traditional AI content creation. This is precisely why the victimization is so direct: it requires the likeness of a real person. As the study notes, these tools are designed to:

“…visualize what individuals might look like without clothing.”

By using a real individual as a “basis image,” the technology allows for the digital removal of clothing, turning a casual school photo into CSEM in seconds. The distinction between a “fake” image and a “real” person is erased, leading to a profound degree of direct victimization.

Are you exploring your trauma? Do you feel your childhood experiences were detrimental to your current mental or physical health? Utilize this free, validated, self-report questionnaire to find out.

Take the Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) Questionnaire

Takeaway 3: The High Cost of Non-Consensual “Deepfakes”

The most heartbreaking aspect of this shift is the erosion of consent. The data highlights a crisis of victimization: 36.3% of participants reported having a non-consensual image of them created, and 33.2% had such an image shared without their permission.

Victims describe a visceral sense of “powerlessness” and “dehumanization.” When your likeness can be hijacked and sexualized without your involvement, it leads to a state of constant hypervigilance. Crucially, these statistics represent a lower bound of the crisis. Because the study only measured peer-to-peer actions, it does not account for images created by adults exploiting minors or images of children under the age of 13. If those variables were included, the scale of victimization would likely skyrocket.

Takeaway 4: The Gender and Age Myths Around AI Nudification Debunked

We often fall into the trap of thinking digital crises are limited to specific subcultures or older teens. The data tells a different story. The usage of AI nudification tools is remarkably uniform across all demographics: race, region, and sexual orientation showed no statistically significant differences in prevalence. This is a universal adolescent issue.

While male participants showed higher rates of regular (frequent) creation and distribution, the most startling finding was the age breakdown. There was no statistically significant difference in usage between 13-year-olds and 17-year-olds. This destroys the myth that we can wait until high school to talk about AI safety. To be effective, digital literacy and intervention must begin before age 13, as younger adolescents are already engaging with these tools at the same rates as their older peers.

Learn why it’s important for everyone, especially teens, to be able to control their online experiences. Dick Pic Culture: How do Teenage Girls Navigate it?

Takeaway 5: A Legal and Ethical Gray Zone

We must call these images what they are: CSEM. Under federal law (18 U.S. Code § 1466A), the production and distribution of pornographic GenAI images of minors is illegal, regardless of whether the image is “real.”

This puts policymakers in an ethical bind.

We are currently seeing thousands of adolescents technically committing federal crimes as part of “exploratory” peer behavior. Ethicists and lawmakers are now forced to debate whether we need legal “carve-outs” for consensual, same-age peer interactions, or if the permanent digital harm of these images necessitates strict criminal enforcement. Meanwhile, “gray market” apps continue to bypass app store controls, providing easy access to nudification tools without any meaningful age verification.

Conclusion: A Call for Proactive Digital Literacy

The window for intervention is narrow but still open. Because much of the current usage is reported as “exploratory” rather than “habitual,” we have a brief opportunity to steer this generation toward a more ethical digital future. However, our response cannot be reactive. We need multimodal education that doesn’t just teach “online safety” but addresses the profound ethical weight of AI tools and the lifelong impact of non-consensual sharing.

Final Thought: As we enter an era where a child’s likeness can be permanently decoupled from their consent in a matter of clicks, we must ask: Are our legal and educational frameworks fundamentally incompatible with this new reality, or are we simply too slow to protect the first generation of AI adolescents?

What really drives sexual desire? We often rely on a handful of common assumptions about age, gender, and relationships to answer this question. But what happens when we peel back the layers and look at the science behind sex drive?

A groundbreaking study from the Estonian Biobank provides some of the clearest answers to date, challenging much of our conventional wisdom.

By analyzing data from over 67,000 participants (N = 67,334), researchers uncovered a complex tapestry of unseen forces shaping who wants sex and why. This article shares the most counter-intuitive findings from this massive study that are changing our understanding of human libido.

The Gender Gap in Desire is Wider and More Persistent Than we Thought

The first force this study brings into sharp focus is gender.

While it’s no secret that men, on average, report higher sex drive than women, this research revealed the difference to be exceptionally large and consistent across the lifespan.

In fact, the effect size found was even larger than those documented in previous large-scale meta-analyses. η² = 0.18, a large effect size indicating that gender alone explained a substantial 18% of the difference in desire.

This robust finding underscores just how profound and persistent the influence of gender is on libido. The study’s authors highlight the sheer magnitude of this difference across different life stages:

“Even the peak of average woman’s sexual desire at ages around 20 to 30 remains lower than men’s average levels across much of adulthood. It is only after the age of 60 + that men’s declining sexual desire falls below the highest levels ever reported by women.”

Furthermore, the research showed that this gap in desire actually widens with age, reaching its peak in the 60+ age group.

Men’s Sex Drive Peaks Surprisingly Late

We’re often told that a man’s sex drive is like a rocket. Supposedly peaking in his late teens and slowly coming down.

This study, however, suggests it’s more of a long climb to a high plateau.

Contrary to popular belief, men’s sexual desire actually peaked around their late 30s to early 40s. This finding was particularly surprising because it runs counter to what we know about male biology.

The researchers noted the unexpected nature of this pattern:

“A noteworthy finding was that men’s sexual desire peaked around the age of 40, exceeding even early adulthood levels… This pattern is surprising because it does not align with the well-documented trajectory of testosterone decline…”

This suggests that factors beyond simple biology are at play.

The researchers propose that men in this age group “are more likely to be in stable long-term relationships, which have been associated with increased sexual activity and emotional intimacy.”

In another fascinating hypothesis, they suggest that as men get older, their “levels of desire may be starting to adapt to their partner’s declining levels of desire,” which could help explain the drop-off in later life.

Parenthood Affects Men and Women’s Desire in Opposite Ways

One of the most fascinating unseen forces revealed by the study was how parenthood impacts libido differently for men and women.

For men, having more children was consistently associated with higher sexual desire. This effect grew stronger with each additional child, with the largest positive association found in fathers with five children. β = 0.43, indicating a strong positive association between fatherhood of five children and higher desire compared to mothers.

This stands in stark contrast to the experience of women, where the demands of parenthood are frequently linked to a decline in desire. A trend also suggested by the study’s data.

The researchers speculate that this opposing effect may reflect:

“…gendered differences in parental roles, stress levels, time availability, and energy investment within a family.”

They also offer a thought-provoking alternative explanation: it’s possible that “higher levels of desire may contribute to men having more children” in the first place, showing the complex relationship between cause and effect.

Single People May Actually Have a Higher Sex Drive

It’s often assumed that being in a committed relationship is the key to a healthy sex drive.

At first glance, the data seemed to support this, showing that partnered people had slightly higher desire on average. But when the researchers used a more powerful statistical lens, controlling for factors like age and gender, the picture flipped.

Partnered individuals actually reported lower sexual desire compared to their single counterparts. β = −0.10, a small but statistically significant effect suggesting that, all else being equal, being in a relationship was linked to a slight decrease in desire.

This surprising result challenges the idea that a relationship automatically sustains high desire. The study’s authors suggest this could be related to habituation in long-term partnerships, a phenomenon that “particularly for women, points to the potential for habituation and shifts in relational dynamics over time.”

In other words, the comfort of a long-term relationship may sometimes come at the expense of novelty.

Your Career Choice Could Be Linked to Your Libido

In perhaps the most novel finding, the study uncovered a remarkable link between a person’s occupation and their level of sexual desire. Simple averages suggested that people in manual-labor and military jobs had the highest libido, but the researchers quickly noted this was likely because those fields are dominated by younger men.

The real story emerged after controlling for factors like age and gender. The study then compared all occupations to a baseline group: senior managers. The results were clear:

Lower Desire Occupations (Compared to Senior Managers): After accounting for other factors, nearly every other occupation was linked to significantly lower sexual desire. This effect was especially strong for elementary workers (β = -0.27), skilled workers and craftsmen (β = -0.19), and office and customer service workers (β = -0.16).

This highlights the often-overlooked connection between our professional lives, daily stress, and our personal well-being. It suggests that the pressures and routines of our jobs can be a powerful, hidden influence on our libido.

Conclusion: Rethinking What We Know About Sex Drive

This research paints a new picture where desire isn’t just a biological switch. It’s a dynamic outcome of a person’s age, gender, parental role, relationship status, and even their career.

The fact that these demographic and life factors alone could explain nearly 30% of the variance in sexual desire underscores just how profoundly they shape this fundamental human experience.

As we learn more about the complex web of factors that shape our desires, how might we change the conversations we have about sexuality in our own relationships?

Drop your thoughts in the comments.

When you picture someone with a gambling disorder, a specific image might come to mind. But what if that stereotype is outdated and dangerously incomplete?

A groundbreaking new study from an innovative program in Madrid called ‘Adcom’ reveals that the digital age is forging a new, more complex, and more hidden type of gambling addict. This research, based on hundreds of individuals who sought help voluntarily. And it challenges our most common assumptions about who is affected and why.

This article shares the most impactful and counter-intuitive findings from this research.

Prepare to see what gambling addiction really looks like today.

1. It’s Rarely Just About Gambling: The Hidden Mental Health Crisis

One of the study’s most critical findings is the extremely high rate at which Gambling Disorder co-occurs with other serious mental health conditions.

This situation, known as “Gambling Dual Disorder (GDD),” suggests that gambling is not an isolated issue. It’s a symptom of a much larger mental health struggle.

Among the participants who self-referred for a gambling problem, the numbers were stark:

57.4% showed evidence of other psychopathological symptoms.

64.9% experienced significant symptoms of depression.

51.3% were at risk for an anxiety disorder.

37.4% screened positive for ADHD.

This reframes gambling not as a simple lack of willpower, but as a complex disorder deeply intertwined with a person’s overall mental well-being. To be effective, treatment cannot just focus on the gambling; it must address these co-occurring conditions as well.

Gambling Disorder can be defined as “persistent and recurrent problematic gambling that leads to significant impairment or distress”.

2. The Digital Divide: Online and Offline People with Gambling Disorder Are Strikingly Different People

This complex mental health picture becomes even more fragmented when we look at where the gambling happens. A divide that is creating two entirely different profiles of addiction.

The study revealed significant and clear differences between online gambling versus those who struggled with offline gambling. The most compelling demographic contrasts paint a clear picture:

Age: The average online gambler was 30.6 years old, a full generation younger than the average offline gambler at 43.4 years old.

Gender: While men were the majority in both groups, the disparity was much greater online. Only 5.3% of online gamblers were female, compared to 20.5% of offline gamblers.

Prior Treatment: Individuals with offline gambling problems were far more likely to have previously sought help for a mental health issue (62.1%) than those with online problems (42.9%).

These differences are profound.

Technology has fractured the landscape of addiction. It’s created a younger, more isolated cohort that is harder to reach.

The fact that this online group has had significantly less prior contact with mental health services suggests a new, underserved population. A population that may not be captured by traditional outreach and may be less aware of their own underlying conditions.

3. A Shocking Connection: Gambling Disorder and Compulsive Buying Go Hand-in-Hand

Perhaps the single most surprising finding was the powerful link between Gambling Disorder and another behavioral addiction: compulsive buying.

The study found that compulsive buying was a potential problem in an astonishing 85.2% of participants.

Breaking this down even further, for 57.7% of the entire group, the existence of a compulsive buying problem was considered “very probable/sure.”

This is highly counter-intuitive.

While both behaviors involve money, they are often viewed as completely separate issues. This powerful correlation is not just a quirky finding. It’s evidence that Gambling Disorder may be part of a broader spectrum of impulse-control disorders rooted in similar neurological pathways. It highlights a shared underlying mechanism related to the brain’s reward system and the cycle of financial distress and emotional coping.

4. Your Background and Other Vices Can Predict How You Gamble

The study went beyond simple descriptions to identify factors that could predict whether a person was more likely to struggle with online versus offline gambling. This analysis revealed a complex interplay of cultural factors, lifestyle, and co-occurring disorders that shape a person’s specific addictive behaviors.

The research identified several key predictors:

Being born in Spain increased the odds of having an online gambling problem by more than five times.

Excessive Internet use nearly tripled the odds of having an online gambling problem.

Conversely, having a co-occurring alcohol addiction or an eating disorder significantly reduced the odds of having an online problem, making it far more likely the gambling problem was offline.

These points reveal that the specific form an addiction takes is not random. It is shaped by a combination of a person’s environment, other behaviors, and personal history.

Conclusion: A New Call for Awareness of Gambling Disorder

The message from this research is clear: the digital age has forged a new profile of gambling addiction that is younger, more hidden, and more complex. The old stereotypes simply don’t fit the modern reality.

Innovative programs like Adcom, which lower the barriers to seeking help, are not only crucial for providing treatment but also for gathering the vital data needed to truly understand the problem. This new knowledge allows for better prevention, more targeted interventions, and a more compassionate public understanding of a deeply challenging disorder.

Knowing that online addiction strikes a younger group with less mental health history, how must we radically change our outreach to find and help this hidden population before it’s too late?

Introduction: More Than a Memory

It is widely understood that childhood trauma, particularly childhood sexual abuse (CSA), leaves deep and lasting psychological scars.

The experience can shape a person’s emotional landscape for a lifetime. It can lead to challenges like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety. For many, the impact feels profound, but the injury itself can seem invisible.

But what if the damage wasn’t just psychological? What if the trauma left a physical, measurable imprint on the very structure of the brain? A new brain imaging study provides compelling evidence that this is exactly what happens.

The research focuses specifically on the long-term neurophysiological effects of CSA in men. We know this is a topic that remains heavily stigmatized and under-researched. Despite its prevalence, with approximately 1 in 25 men in Canada experiencing sexual abuse before age 15 (Heidinger, 2022), the physical toll it takes has been poorly understood until now.

This study begins to change that.

1. Childhood Trauma Physically Alters the Brain’s “Communication Highways”

The researchers used a specialized MRI technique called Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI). DTI looks deep inside the brain’s white matter.

You can think of white matter as the brain’s internal communication wiring or its information superhighways. White matter consists of bundles of nerve fibers that connect different brain regions and allow them to work together seamlessly.

The study measured a key property of this wiring called “fractional anisotropy” (FA). In simple terms, FA is a measure of the integrity and efficiency of these communication pathways.

Higher FA values indicate well-organized, healthy wiring. While lower values suggest the wiring may be less organized, frayed, or poorly insulated, leading to disrupted signaling.

The study’s core finding was unequivocal: the group of men with a history of CSA had significantly lower FA values in multiple key brain regions compared to the control group. This provides clear physical proof that the trauma fundamentally rewired the brain’s architecture.

2. The Damage Targets Critical Hubs for Emotion, Memory, and Executive Function

The study revealed that the structural changes were not random. They were concentrated in white matter tracts that are critical for regulating the very functions that many survivors struggle with.

The specific regions affected include:

The Superior Longitudinal Fasciculus (SLF): This massive tract showed the largest effect. A finding with a statistical effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.902) so large it indicates a profound difference between the groups. The damage was most pronounced in a segment called SLF II. This connects key hubs for attention and memory to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), a critical command center for executive function. This provides a direct neurobiological link explaining why a survivor might struggle with daily tasks like concentrating at work or managing complex projects.

The Cingulum: As a key part of the brain’s limbic system, the cingulum is a hub for processing emotion, behavior, and memory. Damage here has been previously linked to PTSD and depression. This offers a biological reason for the persistent feelings of anxiety or the intrusive memories that can define a survivor’s experience.

The Anterior Thalamic Radiation and Forceps Minor: These tracts are essential wiring for the frontal lobe, supporting executive functions like planning complex behaviors and impulse control. Compromised integrity in these pathways can help explain difficulties with emotional regulation and decision-making that survivors often report.

In short, the brain scans reveal a physical roadmap of the injury, showing that the damage isn’t random. It targets the very systems that survivors rely on to regulate emotion, process memory, and maintain focus.

3. Structural Damage from Childhood Trauma Helps Explain Real-World Cognitive Emotional Challenges

One of the most powerful aspects of this research is how it connects the brain’s physical structure to its real-time function.

Some of the same men who participated in this DTI study also took part in another study that used a functional MRI (fMRI) to see how their brains worked during a challenging mental task (Chiasson et al., 2021).

That fMRI study found that when performing an emotional working memory task, the men with CSA histories showed altered brain activation patterns.

Instead of relying on their dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), the brain’s executive control center, they showed increased activation in limbic areas, the brain’s emotional hub.

This new DTI study provides a compelling physical explanation for why. The structural damage to the Superior Longitudinal Fasciculus (SLF II), the “highway” that leads directly to the dlPFC, helps explain why that executive control center was less active. The damaged road was unable to carry the traffic. It forced the brain to create functional “detours” through more emotional pathways. It directly links the physical brain changes to the functional difficulties survivors experience.

4. This Evidence is a Powerful Tool Against Stigma Around Male Childhood Trauma

For male survivors of CSA, stigma and shame often create immense barriers to seeking help. This research offers a powerful tool to fight that stigma.

Having objective, empirical evidence that trauma causes a tangible, neurophysiological injury helps reframe the survivor’s experience.

It is not “just in their head” or a sign of weakness; it is a physical injury that requires understanding and clinical support.

The study’s authors highlight this crucial implication in their conclusion:

“Raising awareness of the impact of CSA is crucial—not only to help destigmatize the topic and encourage more men to seek help, but also to equip clinicians with a better understanding of CSA’s neuro-physiological effects, ultimately contributing to more effective interventions and improved treatment outcomes.”

By demonstrating the physical reality of traumatic injury, this research helps move the conversation around male CSA away from silence and stigma and toward one of scientific understanding, compassion, and informed care.

Conclusion: A Deeper Understanding of Healing

This study offers a stark and clear message: childhood trauma is a profound event that can physically reshape the brain’s architecture.

For men who have survived childhood sexual abuse, this research provides concrete, scientific validation of their experience. It shows that the challenges they face are rooted in tangible changes to the brain’s white matter.

The findings underscore that healing from trauma is not merely a psychological exercise but a process that involves a brain that has been physically altered.

As we continue to uncover the deep nature of traumatic injury, it prompts a vital question for us all:

How might this change our approach to healing, compassion, and justice for survivors?

Introduction: The Illusion of Choice

For many, gambling is seen as a form of entertainment, a voluntary activity where personal responsibility is paramount. We’re told to gamble responsibly. But, if things go wrong, the blame is often placed on the individual’s lack of self-control.

But what if that entire narrative is a dangerous fiction?

A new public health study reveals gambling harm is not an unfortunate side effect of a few people’s poor choices. Instead, it is the calculated outcome of a powerful and deliberate “gambling ecosystem” designed to maximize profit at a severe human cost.

This system operates using tactics that public health experts call the “commercial determinants of health.” The same strategies used by the tobacco and fossil fuel to drive profit by undermining public wellbeing.

This post will reveal five of the most impactful insights from the study, exposing the hidden truths of an industry that has mastered the art of engineering harm.

1. The “Responsible Gambling” Slogan is Designed to Blame YOU

The familiar phrase “gamble responsibly” is not a genuine public health message but a strategic discourse meticulously promoted by the industry. The primary function of this narrative is to shift the focus, and the blame, onto the individual consumer.

By framing harm as a personal failing, it deflects attention. It deflects it from:

Predatory industry practices

Unsafe products

A system that profits from addiction

This blame-shifting has severe consequences, creating a culture of shame that prevents people from seeking help and isolates them when they are most vulnerable. As the study’s authors note:

This emphasis on individual responsibility diverts attention from the practices of the industry. It generates stigma and shame for those harmed. It downplays serious harms caused by gambling. Worst of all: it contributes to the suicide toll.

This psychological framing is so damaging because it convinces individuals that their suffering is their own fault, making it harder to recognize the external forces at play and seek the support they need.

2. The Gambling Industry’s Goal is For You to “Play to Extinction”

Behind the glamorous advertising and messages of entertainment lies a stark and chilling internal objective. The study highlights a term used by gambling industry representatives to describe their core aim: “playing to extinction.”

This isn’t an exaggeration; it’s the industry’s own vocabulary for its business model:

“…gambling industry representatives describe their aim is to maximise revenue per available customer (revpac), and encourage ‘playing to extinction’, the point at which a customer has exhausted all available funds.”

The phrase has a chilling double meaning.

It refers to the financial extinction of a customer’s funds, but in the context of gambling-related suicide, it acquires a much darker significance.

The industry’s profit model depends on pushing customers into the exact states of financial ruin and profound despair that are known precursors to suicide. It is a business model that treats human crisis as a key performance indicator. Rather than a tragic crisis.

3. Products are Engineered to Undermine Your Control

Modern gambling products, especially digital ones, are not simple games of chance. They have been intentionally intensified with features like:

Increased speed

High complexity

“Frictionless” transactions

All designed to encourage extended use and bypass a person’s executive function.

The industry also employs digital tactics like sludging. Deliberately designing interactions to make it difficult for customers to act in their own best interest. Such as withdrawing funds or closing an account. This tactic also manifests physically. For 15 years, the Australian industry has resisted modern, universal pre-commitment systems that allow users to set binding loss limits. Instead, it has relied on a form of physical sludging: “manual, paper-based self-exclusion” that requires a person to fill out separate forms for every single venue they wish to avoid.

Product design also deploys psychological tricks to encourage overspending.

The study points out that a single ticket in the Australian “Powerball” lottery can be priced as high as AUD$46,249.65. This serves as a psychological anchor. While few would buy it, its existence makes spending smaller—yet still exorbitant—amounts like hundreds or thousands of dollars seem reasonable by comparison.

4. “Good Causes” are Used as a Smokescreen

A common defense of the gambling industry is that it funds worthy causes, from sports teams to community charities. The research argues this is a calculated strategy to create an “‘alibi’ to legitimise gambling operations” and procure a “social license” to operate.

This linkage creates a “symbiotic, reflexive relationship” where community groups become financially captured. Reliant on gambling revenue, these beneficiaries become powerful allies in resisting reforms that could threaten their funding, even if those reforms would reduce harm. This insidious dependency creates a powerful barrier to reform.

As one researcher observed, the dynamic is inescapable:

… at first the lottery was primarily dependent on the good cause and then, gradually, the good cause became increasingly dependent on the lottery.

5. The Gambling Industry Distorts Science and Influences Policy

Like the tobacco and fossil fuel industries before it, the gambling ecosystem actively works to control and distort the scientific evidence base to protect its interests. The study identifies two key tactics:

Funding “safe” research: The industry funds and promotes research focused on the individual, such as the influential “pathways model.” This model frames gambling harm as an artifact of pre-existing conditions like “antisocial personality disorder,” thereby shifting blame from the addictive product to the flawed consumer.

Discrediting effective solutions: The ecosystem publicly casts doubt on proven harm-prevention tools. The paper cites an industry-linked researcher who claimed that universal pre-commitment systems might have a “detrimental effect and may aggravate the problem.” Crucially, the study notes that a subsequent review of the evidence cited for this claim found “no support for this conclusion,” noting the studies had significant “methodological limitations.” This reveals a pattern of distorting weak evidence to undermine effective public health measures.

This distortion of science is coupled with political donations and the “revolving door”—where politicians and staff take industry jobs after leaving office—to block or delay meaningful reforms that could save lives.

Conclusion: Shifting from Individual Blame to Systemic Accountability

The evidence is clear: gambling harm is not a simple story of poor individual choices. It is the predictable and profitable result of a commercial system meticulously designed to addict users, shift blame, and protect its revenue streams at all costs. From manipulative product design to the distortion of science, the gambling ecosystem functions as a commercial determinant of health, actively generating and sustaining harm.

This reframing moves the problem from one of personal responsibility to one of systemic accountability. Seeing the deliberate system that drives these harms, what does real responsibility—from our governments, communities, and the industry itself—truly look like?

Beyond Addiction

When we talk about porn use, the conversation often gets stuck in simple, black-and-white narratives of morality or addiction. We tend to focus on how much someone is watching, rather than asking a more fundamental question: why? While these discussions are common, they often miss a deeper, more nuanced psychological story that’s playing out behind our screens.

What if our relationship with pornography isn’t just a habit, but a reflection of our most basic patterns of connecting with other people? This is the central idea behind attachment theory. It suggests that our earliest bonds with caregivers shape how we approach intimacy, trust, and emotional closeness throughout our lives. These deep-seated patterns are known as our “attachment style.”

A recent systematic review of 10 scientific studies has begun to connect these dots. It’s uncovered surprising links between our attachment styles and our pornography habits.

This article explores the four most impactful takeaways from that research.

It reveals how our fundamental needs for connection, and our fears of rejection, can shape what happens when we’re alone with a screen.

1. For some men, porn use is linked to better relationship satisfaction

Attachment styles are patterns in how we connect with others, stemming from our early life experiences. “Anxious attachment” style, for example, creates a deep desire for intimacy but lives with a persistent fear of rejection or abandonment.

Counterintuitively, one major study reviewed by the researchers (Maas et al., 2018) found that for men with this anxious attachment style, porn use was actually associated with higher relationship satisfaction.

This finding becomes even more striking when contrasted with the results for women in the same study.

For anxiously attached women, porn use was associated with lower relationship satisfaction.

This sharp gender difference underscores a crucial point: the effects of pornography are not one-size-fits-all.

They are deeply intertwined with our individual psychology, our gender, and our attachment style. This suggests that for anxious men, pornography might act as a low-stakes supplement that doesn’t trigger their core fear of abandonment. Whereas, for anxious women, it may directly activate it.

2. Problematic porn use can be a way to cope with a fear of real intimacy

The review highlights a powerful theme: for those with insecure attachment styles, pornography offers a sense of connection without the perceived risks of real-world emotional intimacy.

This is particularly true for individuals with an avoidant attachment style. They often fear being engulfed by a relationship and losing their independence. Research shows that for this group, addictive cybersex use can become a direct substitute for the emotional closeness they find threatening.

While both anxious and avoidant individuals may turn to pornography, their motivations often differ.

Someone with an avoidant style might use it to replace an intimacy they fear. However, someone with an anxious style might use it to soothe anxiety about a connection they crave.

In both cases, porn use can become a substitute for genuine connection when real relationships feel too overwhelming.

The review synthesizes this concept perfectly:

When people with insecure attachments use pornography to satisfy their relational needs of comfort, they engage in little or less emotional closeness and commitment, which allays their worries of abandonment and separation.

This reframes problematic use not merely as an addiction, but as a potentially maladaptive strategy for managing deep-seated relational fears of either being left alone or being consumed by another.

3. For anxiously attached women, porn use is linked to body insecurity; specifically when they’re in a relationship

Another study in the review (Gerwitz-Meydan et al., 2021) uncovered a highly specific link for women with an anxious attachment style.

For these women, an association between their attachment style and porn use was found only if they were currently in a relationship. For single women with the same attachment style, there was no significant association.

The research identified a crucial factor driving this connection: body image self-consciousness. The study found that pornography use acted as a mediator between anxious attachment and body image issues.

In simple terms, this means that for anxiously attached women in a relationship, viewing pornography may trigger or intensify insecurities about their own bodies.

This, in turn, can activate their underlying attachment-related fears of being inadequate for their partner. Porn use directly threatens their sense of security and stoking their core fear of abandonment.

4. There’s a psychological link between ADHD, both anxious and avoidant attachment, and compulsive porn use.

The review also sheds light on the intersection of attachment, neurodiversity, and pornography.

One study (Niazof et al., 2019) found that problematic pornography use in men with ADHD was linked to both anxious and avoidant attachment styles, but in different ways.

Higher levels of anxious attachment were linked to excessive pornography use, while avoidant attachment was associated with higher levels of problematic use.

The researchers point to a potential explanation for this link: the “incentive deficit” that is often a characteristic of ADHD.

This concept suggests that individuals with ADHD may be more drawn to highly stimulating, novel, and instantly gratifying behaviors. It helps ADHD porn users to compensate for a brain that may be under-stimulated by everyday rewards.

When combined with insecure attachment, this creates a potent mix.

For the anxiously attached man with ADHD, pornography might serve as an easily accessible tool to soothe relational anxiety.

For the avoidantly attached man with ADHD, it may be a compelling substitute for the real-world intimacy he fears. It fulfills a need for stimulation without triggering his fear of closeness.

Conclusion: Beyond How Much to Why

The research clearly shows that our relationship with pornography is more complex than self-control or moral standing.

It can be a powerful and often unconscious reflection of our deepest relational patterns. It reveals our unmet needs for connection, and our most profound fears of intimacy and rejection.

This perspective invites us to shift the conversation.

Instead of focusing solely on the behavior itself, perhaps the more important question to ask is: What deeper needs and fears is this behavior trying to meet?

Share how this post spoke to you, or about someone you love. Do you believe you use pornography to compensate for your attachment style? Why or why not?

The Surprising Psychology of Sports Gambling

Are you thinking about placing a little wager on a football game this holiday season? With the rapid growth and normalization of sports gambling across the United States and Canada, betting on a game is more common than ever. But what are the real reasons people gamble?

Most would assume it’s simply for fun, to make a game more exciting, or for the chance to win money. But what if the most important metric for gambling risk isn’t on a bank statement, but in the unseen emotions driving the bet?

A recent study of over 900 sports bettors reveals a more complex picture, uncovering deeper psychological motivations that separate casual fun from problematic behavior. The findings challenge our basic assumptions about gambling risk. This article will break down the five most impactful takeaways from this research, revealing that the “why” behind a bet is far more important than the “how much.”

1. Your Reason for Betting Matters More Than How Much You Spend

One of the study’s most unexpected findings was the relationship between mental health, betting habits, and gambling problems. The research showed that greater anxiety and depression were strongly linked to the severity of a person’s gambling problems. However, these emotional states were not significantly related to the total amount of money a person spent or the total number of bets they made.

This insight reframes how we should think about risk. It’s not just about the financial footprint of betting, but the emotional impetus behind it.

According to the study, the true indicator of risk isn’t found in a bettor’s bank statement, but in the emotional state that drives them to bet in the first place.

This is a critical distinction. It shifts the focus from a purely financial view of problem gambling to a psychological one, suggesting that the “why” you bet is a more telling sign of risk than the “how much” you spend.

2. The Crucial Difference: Gambling for Fun vs. Betting to Escape

The study identified two key motivations that drive people to bet, each with vastly different outcomes:

Enhancement Motives: Betting to increase positive emotions. This is the classic reason—placing a wager to add to the thrill and enjoyment of watching a game.

Coping Motives: Betting to reduce or escape from negative feelings, such as anxiety, stress, or depression.

The results linked to each motive were counter-intuitive.

This revealed a fascinating paradox: while betting to enhance the fun of a game was linked to placing bets more often, it was simultaneously associated with fewer gambling problems. This suggests a clear psychological dividing line between frequent, low-risk engagement and problematic, high-risk behavior.

In stark contrast, betting to cope was the single strongest pathway linking pre-existing anxiety and depression to serious gambling problems.

Crucially, this connection held true even when the researchers accounted for other potential drivers like betting for social or financial reasons, isolating ‘coping’ as the most dangerous motivation. This finding strongly supports the “emotionally vulnerable pathway” model of problem gambling, where individuals use gambling as a maladaptive strategy to manage emotional distress.

3. “In-Play” Gambling Is a Different Beast Entirely

“In-play” sports betting, defined as making wagers during a live game, has exploded in popularity. The study’s findings on this specific group were stark. Compared to bettors who only place wagers before a game starts (single-event or traditional bettors), in-play bettors reported:

Significantly higher levels of problem gambling.

Significantly higher scores for both anxiety and depression.

A higher frequency of betting.

This raises a critical question for researchers: does the high-speed, constant-feedback nature of in-play betting actively create psychological distress, or does it primarily attract individuals already struggling with anxiety and depression who are seeking a powerful distraction?

4. For Sports Bettors, Anxiety and Depression Are Often Intertwined

The research observed that in this sample of sports bettors, depression and anxiety were “highly correlated.” In simple terms, participants who scored high on one tended to score high on the other.

The researchers noted that this suggests these conditions are more likely to be comorbid—or occur together—in people who bet on sports. The connection was so strong that the effects of anxiety and depression on gambling behaviors often overlapped. This reinforces the concept of a combined “emotional vulnerability” that can fuel problematic gambling, rather than a single, isolated mental health issue.

5. The Psychological Blueprint Is Surprisingly Consistent Across Genders

The study also examined differences between men and women, revealing a nuanced picture. On the surface, there were clear differences in behavior and emotional states:

Men engaged in sports betting on significantly more days than women.

Women reported significantly higher levels of anxiety, depression, and betting for social and coping reasons.

Despite these differences in emotional states and motivations, men and women reported statistically similar levels of overall gambling problems.

The more profound finding was that despite these surface-level differences, the underlying psychological model was the same for both groups.

The core pathways showing how anxiety, depression, and motives lead to gambling problems did not differ between men and women. This suggests that when it comes to the fundamental emotional drivers of problem gambling, gender may not change the blueprint. Interventions, therefore, can likely focus on these consistent psychological drivers for everyone.

Conclusion

This research cuts through the noise of wins, losses, and dollar amounts to deliver a clear message:

Understanding the motivation behind gambling is the key to understanding the risk of it becoming a problem.

While many people bet to enhance their enjoyment of a sport with few negative consequences, the data points to a clear red flag:

The strongest pathway to serious gambling problems isn’t rooted in how much money is spent, but in whether the bettor is motivated by a need to cope with or escape from negative emotions.

Before placing your next bet, it might be worth asking: am I doing this to enhance my fun, or to escape my feelings?
